All silver or silver-plated products can change color over time. Tarnishing of silver is almost inevitable. However, with proper care, silver can be kept in good condition.

For the care of Robbe & Berking silver pieces, a gentle method without strong rubbing is always recommended. It is not advisable to immerse multiple pieces as they can scratch and damage each other. Also, cleaning with aluminum foil and salt is not recommended at all.

Silver is not, however, a sensitive material. On the contrary. Frequent or even daily use is highly recommended, as it is the best protection against tarnishing. The oils from human skin actually inhibit the formation of sulfides, which is what triggers silver tarnishing.

It is recommended to clean silver with products from the Robbe & Berking care range. These gently remove dirt and prevent discoloration, creating a protective film on the silver to slow down deterioration over time.

Other silver care products may contain harsh ingredients that are not suitable for the care of Robbe & Berking silver.

Cleaning in the Dishwasher

All Robbe & Berking silver and silver-plated cutlery can be cleaned in the dishwasher. However, there are a few recommendations that should be followed to keep the silver in good condition.

Some dishwashing detergents are very concentrated and may contain aggressive chemicals. For the best results, follow the tips below:
- For foods that are particularly high in protein or acid, rinse the cutlery (especially knife blades) after use and then place them in the dishwasher.
- Place knives with the blade facing down.
- Use between one-third and half (maximum) of the recommended amount of detergent.
- Dishwasher capsules have a relatively high oxygen content, which is a contributing factor to discoloration (especially "2 in 1" or "3 in 1" capsules). We recommend completely avoiding compact detergents (capsules and powder) and using liquid detergents.
- Use detergent and rinse aid from the same manufacturer or product range, as they are designed to work in harmony together.
- After rinsing, open the dishwasher door to allow steam to escape and prevent deposits caused by salty or acidic steam. To remove any residue from the dishwashing detergent, wipe the cutlery (especially knife blades) with a soft cloth.
- If deposits remain on the cutlery after cleaning the silver in the dishwasher, e.g., due to hard water, they can be easily removed with a Robbe & Berking silver care product.

*Robbe & Berking pieces that contain other materials such as mother-of-pearl or wood cannot be washed in the dishwasher.
