The Ilum Collection is a luxurious range of scented candles and home fragrances, combining porcelain pieces with stunning graphic designs and exceptional scents inspired by family heritage. For example, the Seul Monde scented candle is poured into a handcrafted porcelain vessel, adorned with graphic patterns inspired by the tapestries, ceramic tiles, and wooden sculptures of the Max and Ben brothers’ grandfather’s home in Antwerp. Its fragrance evokes vintage cologne.

The Sahara decorative scented candle spreads a lightly spicy fragrance. The vibrant notes of bergamot blend with incense, nutmeg, and clove, all laid on a base of amber, vanilla, and patchouli, refreshing the home like a fragrant morning desert breeze. The porcelain holder is decorated with golden graphic designs.

Max Benjamin scented candles create the perfect ambiance. Made from a blend of various natural waxes and Italian cotton wicks, they are infused with the finest essential oils. An ideal combination of scents for any room and mood.

The Wick

The braided wick is made of 100% Italian cotton. It contains no lead, ensuring a clean burn without black smoke. The wick is manually applied inside each vessel, perfectly centered to optimize wax burning.

The Wax

100% natural soy wax – NO PARAFFIN.
The wax used in Max Benjamin candles comes from 100% natural sources. It is a blend of soy and other plant-based reusable waxes. It contains no paraffin, is biodegradable, and eco-friendly. Unlike paraffin wax, it burns cleanly without producing soot and contains no animal-derived ingredients.
Because it is plant-based, variations in fragrance and texture may occur; this is completely normal.
The wax is mixed with fragrance (essential oils) at a specific temperature to ensure an even scent release over time. The candle should not burn for more than 2-3 hours at a time—the liquid wax will continue to release fragrance even after the flame is extinguished.

Manufacturing Process

First, about 75% of the vessel’s capacity is poured, then allowed to cool, with any gaps or air bubbles smoothed manually. Next, about 1 cm of wax is poured on top, cooled again, and finally packaged.

About the Brand

Max Benjamin is owned by siblings Orla, Mark, and David Van den Bergh from Enniskerry, County Wicklow. Named after Orla’s twin boys, Max and Ben, the company has been producing natural, hand-poured candles since the 1990s. Max Benjamin’s unique fragrance collections are celebrated worldwide for their contemporary design, craftsmanship, and use of natural ingredients.
Orla Van den Bergh, the founder, learned candle-making in the US, where she discovered the complexities of creating high-quality candles. Her ability to blend different waxes and essential oils came naturally and remains a hallmark of the brand today.
Upon returning to Ireland, Orla brought this expertise home, producing refined candles that became more popular than she could have imagined. And so, the Max Benjamin story began.
